Fishing With Walker Parrot

Growing up along the coast in Hilton Head, S.C., Walker Parrot said he naturally fished every day since he was born.

The 44-year-old has taken that upbringing to the waterways of Transylvania County and now manages Davidson River Outfitters and its guide services. But it was another sport that initially got Parrot to Transylvania.

In 1992, he came to play soccer at Brevard College and stayed. He also received a bachelor’s degree in experimental education and eventually began working at Davidson River Outfitters in 1999.

Parrot is married, he said, with three “furry kids — dogs.” “Moving to the mountains of North Carolina, trout fishing with a fly rod came natural,” Parrott said. “Between guiding, fishing, selling crickets and mountain biking, I feel that I get a lot out of being a fishing guide and resident of western North Carolina.”

When fishing on his own, Parrot likes to explore the fish on the upper reaches of the Davidson River and its tributaries.

“Spring can be the best times for dry fly fishing,” he said. “Once the summer heats up, I try my best to stay on the French Broad for smallmouth.”

For those visiting the area for the first time and looking where to fish, Parrot noted that Pisgah National Forest has so many rivers and creeks that a guide is a good option to consider. Davidson River Outfitters is located at 49 Pisgah Highway in Pisgah Forest. For more information, call (828) 877-418 or go to www.davidsonflyfishing.com.
